The below information was supplied by the Gleann Amateur Boxing Club in their request:
"The above named amateur boxing club was recently formed on 27 June 2001. The club will operate from the above named address which is located within the West Belfast area. The area is among the worst 10% of areas in N. Ireland, in terms of deprivations. The club will help the local community tremendously through hopefully giving a lot of young people the opportunity to become interested in boxing, and in the process take them away from the temptation of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour which is common place in the area. The club would provide a service to the local community within a 2-mile radius.
Hopefully, the club can attract enough funding in due course to enable newly recruited boxers to gain in experience and knowledge, so they can compete throughout Europe and indeed the world, and maybe eventually get to the top of their sport through ultimately representing 'Ireland' in major competition.
There has been a hugh initial interest in the new club, but the problem for the club to date has been the lack of funding. The club's committee would ask if you could help the club financially in any way, if so, this would be greatly appreciated."
