Article concerning the extreme lack of adolescent psychiatric beds in Northern Ireland - ONLY SIX EXIST in the entire six counties! The Family Trauma Centre headed and founded by Arlene Healey is discussed and the work being done there to help families traumatized by the conflict, punishment beatings, etc.
Significant article published in the Ireland Journal of Psychiatric Medicine's 2000 Magazine - This is an extremely important editorial within the magazine addressing the high degree of suicide among teenagers where, "...one in 100 teenagers in the UK attempt suicide and it is now the most common reason for admission to hospital in this age group". It also addresses the grave concerns in Northern Ireland where there is "...an increasing trend in admissions of young Northern Irish teenagers (under 18) to adult psychiatric inpatient care...." Additionally, a four-tier model of care "...advocated by the Health Advisory Service and by other key bodies and committees including the Mental Health Foundation and the Audit Commission." - this is a must read article!
